Crypto’s Rally Broadens as Altcoins Take the Lead and Capital Rotates Beyond Bitcoin

SteelGate market data show strong participation beneath a relatively quiet Bitcoin tape, with Aerodrome, Ethena and Sui leading 24-hour gains while Solana, Sui and NEAR dominate a volume-weighted measure of capital rotation.

The cryptocurrency market entered September 26 with an unusual combination: the headline benchmarks were relatively subdued, but activity beneath the surface was considerably stronger.

At approximately 2:39 a.m. ET, SteelGate’s market-intelligence snapshot placed the total cryptocurrency market capitalization at roughly $2.85 trillion, up 0.23% over 24 hours. Bitcoin was nearly flat, slipping 0.16%, while Ether was up just 0.37%.

Yet those modest moves concealed a much broader advance.

Of the 100 crypto assets tracked by the SteelGate's market intelligence system, 74 were higher over the preceding 24 hours and 23 were lower. The median asset gained approximately 1.64%, while the capitalization-weighted return was a more restrained 0.27%.

That distinction is important. It suggests the strongest movement was occurring away from the very largest assets rather than being driven primarily by Bitcoin and Ether.

The pattern is broadly consistent with other market measures. CoinDesk reported on September 25 that 93 of the 100 constituents in its CoinDesk 100 had advanced as Bitcoin consolidated around $84,000, describing a market in which altcoins were outperforming the largest cryptocurrency. CoinDesk

The result is a market that, at least in this snapshot, looks less like a Bitcoin-led breakout and more like a widening rotation through the crypto complex.

The 24-Hour Leaders

The most dramatic moves were concentrated among smaller and mid-sized assets.

Aerodrome Finance (AERO) led SteelGate's 100-asset universe with a 25.11% 24-hour advance. It was followed by Ethena (ENA), up 20.72%, and Sui (SUI), up 13.81%.

The remainder of the leading group was similarly strong:

Asset

24H change

AERO

+25.11%

ENA

+20.72%

SUI

+13.81%

SEI

+13.46%

LDO

+13.17%

TON

+12.40%

WLD

+9.74%

NEAR

+9.49%

Aerodrome's move was particularly notable because it was not isolated to the SteelGate data. The Block's market data also showed AERO up more than 20% around the same period, with substantial 24-hour trading activity. Aerodrome operates as a major automated-market-maker and liquidity venue on Coinbase's Base network. The Block

But price appreciation alone does not establish why a token moved. Crypto markets frequently combine fundamental news, leverage, liquidity conditions and momentum, making single-cause explanations difficult.

Ethena provides a clearer example of a catalyst coinciding with price strength.

One day before the SteelGate snapshot, Ethena disclosed an expansion of the strategy supporting its USDe synthetic dollar. The project plans to incorporate tokenized U.S. equities through Binance's bStocks while using equity perpetual futures as hedges.

The Block reported that Binance had more than $2.9 billion of equity-perpetual open interest based on figures supplied by Ethena. The Block

The announcement does not prove that it caused ENA's 20.72% move, but it provides important context: the rally arrived while the protocol was expanding its model beyond crypto-native collateral and derivatives into tokenized equities.

Sui presented another notable signal. Its 13.81% daily gain was accompanied by approximately $1.38 billion of 24-hour volume in the SteelGate market intelligence system, equal to roughly one-third of its approximately $4.12 billion market capitalization.

That combination—large price movement alongside high turnover—distinguishes the move from an asset rising sharply on relatively little trading activity.

NEAR Shows Why Looking Beyond One Day Matters

NEAR was only eighth among the day's gainers, but its longer-term numbers tell a more consequential story.

SteelGate's market intelligence system showed:

24 hours: +9.49%30 days: +160.78%90 days: +164.43%

The token had reached a market capitalization of approximately $6.17 billion, with nearly $1.29 billion in reported 24-hour volume.

Recent activity surrounding NEAR's cross-chain infrastructure offers useful context.

CoinDesk reported earlier in the week that NEAR had surged as its NEAR Intents service attracted substantial Zcash-related swap traffic. The system allows users to exchange assets across chains without manually moving funds from one blockchain to another.

CoinDesk reported a sixfold increase in daily ZEC volume routed through the service. CoinDesk

Cointelegraph separately reported that cumulative volume through NEAR Intents was approaching $30 billion, alongside the expansion of privacy-oriented trading functionality. Cointelegraph

Again, price and network activity should not be treated as equivalent. But NEAR's combination of strong returns, high trading volume and an identifiable increase in activity around its infrastructure makes it different from a purely low-liquidity momentum move.

Following the Money — Carefully

Price leaderboards tell only part of the story.

SteelGate's market intelligence system also calculates what it calls a 24-hour flow score, designed to estimate the direction and intensity of trading activity.

On that measure, Solana was the largest positive contributor, followed by Sui, NEAR and Ethena.

Asset

SteelGate 24H flow score

SOL

+$1.82B

SUI

+$1.29B

NEAR

+$1.07B

ENA

+$800M

XRP

+$703M

UNI

+$521M

ETH

+$470M

LINK

+$373M

DOGE

+$317M

WLD

+$312M

There is an important qualification.

These figures are not blockchain wallet inflows, ETF flows or literal net purchases.

SteelGate's model calculates the measure from 24-hour trading volume and the direction and magnitude of the asset's price move. In simplified terms, it asks:

How much trading activity occurred, and how strongly was that activity associated with upward or downward price movement?

That makes it better interpreted as a capital-rotation or directional-activity proxy.

The distinction matters because trading volume itself contains both a buyer and seller for every completed transaction. A $1 billion day of volume does not mean $1 billion of new money entered an asset.

CoinGecko similarly cautions against equating changes in market capitalization with cash inflows: capitalization can increase simply because the marginal market price rises, while trading volume measures the value of completed trades rather than net capital entering an asset. CoinGecko

With that caveat, the SteelGate flow measure reveals something interesting.

Solana Leads the Rotation Without Leading the Gainers

Solana rose 3.47% over 24 hours—strong, but nowhere near AERO's 25% gain.

Yet SOL generated the largest positive flow score at approximately $1.82 billion.

The explanation is scale.

Solana recorded about $4.46 billion in 24-hour trading volume while carrying a market capitalization of roughly $65.4 billion. A moderate percentage move against that level of activity can represent much more market participation than a larger percentage move in a smaller token.

That makes Solana one of the more consequential signals in the system.

Sui ranked second at $1.29 billion, followed by NEAR at $1.07 billion. Ethena's 20.72% surge put it fourth at approximately $800 million.

Together, those figures portray a rotation focused heavily on alternative smart-contract platforms and decentralized-finance infrastructure.

Ethereum remained part of the positive-flow group, but at approximately $470 million, its score was considerably smaller than Solana's despite ETH processing more than $10 billion in 24-hour trading volume.

The reason is straightforward: Ether's price had moved only 0.37%.

Bitcoin Is the Interesting Exception

Bitcoin tells almost the opposite story.

It was easily the most heavily traded asset in the market intelligence system, with approximately $25.98 billion in 24-hour volume. But BTC was down approximately 0.16%.

Because SteelGate's flow model combines trading activity with price direction, that modest decline against enormous volume produced an estimated negative $520 million directional-flow score.

That should not be interpreted as investors literally withdrawing $520 million from Bitcoin.

Instead, it describes a market in which enormous BTC turnover was occurring without corresponding upward price momentum.

And that may be one of the most important features of the entire snapshot.

Capital was highly active, but the strongest price response was appearing elsewhere.

The Rotation Is Broad, But It Is Not Even

Across the entire tracked universe, SteelGate calculated approximately:

$10.09 billion in positive directional rotation

$821 million in negative directional rotation

$9.26 billion in net positive rotation

The ten largest contributors accounted for approximately 72.3% of the estimated rotation.

That concentration deserves attention.

A market can have broad positive breadth while still relying disproportionately on a smaller group of assets to generate the majority of its economically significant movement.

That is essentially what the data shows here.

Seventy-four of 100 tracked assets advanced, but SOL, SUI, NEAR, ENA and XRP accounted for an unusually large portion of the volume-adjusted upside activity.

There is another layer to the concentration story.

The ten largest cryptocurrencies in SteelGate's universe represented approximately 94.6% of the market capitalization of the 100 assets tracked.

Bitcoin alone had a market capitalization of roughly $1.68 trillion.

So while smaller tokens can dominate a daily percentage-gainer list, their movements still occur inside a market whose valuation is overwhelmingly concentrated at the top.

This is why a 25% move in AERO and a roughly flat day for Bitcoin can simultaneously be true without the former materially altering the overall crypto market's capitalization.

The Longer-Term Picture Looks Very Different

The day's rally also sits inside a much less uniformly positive one-year picture.

Several major cryptocurrencies have posted strong returns over the last 30 to 90 days while remaining substantially below their levels from a year earlier.

SteelGate's snapshot showed:

BTC: +39.42% over 90 days, but -23.16% over 365 days

ETH: +70.94% over 90 days, but -30.37% over 365 days

SOL: +73.02% over 90 days, but -36.50% over 365 days

XRP: +49.64% over 90 days, but -42.74% over 365 days

ADA: +77.80% over 90 days, but -66.09% over 365 days

That changes the interpretation of the current market considerably.

For many assets, the recent strength represents a substantial recovery rather than a move from already elevated annual levels.

Other assets are exceptions.

Hyperliquid's HYPE was approximately 129% higher over 365 days, while Monero was up roughly 95%.

Zcash was the most extreme large-cap outlier in SteelGate's market intelligence system: approximately +90.8% over 30 days, +292% over 90 days and +2,764% over 365 days.

Extreme historical returns like these can distort simple comparisons, which is one reason shorter- and longer-horizon performance should be examined separately.

Bitcoin Still Owns the Market

For all the evidence of rotation into altcoins, the market's ownership structure remains remarkably concentrated.

At the time of SteelGate's snapshot:

Bitcoin dominance: 58.77%

Ethereum dominance: 11.52%

Together, BTC and ETH represented roughly 70.3% of total cryptocurrency market capitalization in the market intelligence system.

Dominance simply measures an asset's market capitalization as a percentage of the broader cryptocurrency market. CoinGecko describes Bitcoin dominance as Bitcoin's market cap divided by total crypto market capitalization. CoinGecko

Because data providers differ in their asset universes, treatment of wrapped assets and update timing, dominance readings can vary somewhat. CoinGecko's live global-market data around the same period placed Bitcoin's share closer to 57%, illustrating why figures from different datasets should not be assumed to be directly interchangeable. CoinGecko

That does not change the larger conclusion.

Bitcoin remains the overwhelmingly dominant asset in crypto.

Ethereum is a distant second.

And every other cryptocurrency collectively competes for what remains.

What the Dominance Numbers Actually Say

A day in which AERO gains 25%, ENA rises 21%, SUI jumps 14% and Bitcoin barely moves can feel like an "altcoin market."

From a performance perspective, it may be.

From a market-value perspective, it is still very much a Bitcoin-centered market.

Bitcoin's roughly $1.68 trillion valuation in SteelGate's snapshot was more than five times Ethereum's approximately $329 billion capitalization. ETH, in turn, remained substantially larger than most of the assets experiencing the day's fastest gains.

The more revealing question, therefore, is not whether Bitcoin has stopped dominating.

It hasn't.

The question is whether marginal trading activity is beginning to spread into a much wider set of assets while Bitcoin retains its structural dominance over the system.

On September 26, the data provide evidence of exactly that configuration.

Bitcoin accounted for nearly three-fifths of the crypto market's value while contributing little to the day's upside. Ethereum remained above 11% dominance but also lagged many smaller assets. Meanwhile, 74 of SteelGate's 100 tracked cryptocurrencies advanced, and Solana, Sui, NEAR and Ethena captured some of the strongest volume-adjusted momentum.

That makes this less a story about Bitcoin losing control of crypto than about the market underneath Bitcoin becoming considerably more active.

Whether that broadening develops into a sustained rotation will require more than a single 24-hour snapshot. But for now, the separation is unusually clear: the largest assets still control the market's value, while a growing share of its momentum is occurring elsewhere.
